Distributed Denial of Service Report for Central Europe Q4 2016

Within 12 months, the amount of DDoS attacks has more than doubled. In the 4th quarter of 2016 the DDoS threat reached a new alarming record-high with 11,575 attacks. Compared to the 4th quarter 2015, this means an increase of 117% in Central Europe alone. The Link11 Security Operation Team (LSOC) had to defend 125 attacks per day.

The current report analyzes over 9,500 DDoS attack that the Link11 Security Operation Center defended for their clients during the 3rd quarter. The statistics are alarming: The total amount of attacks has increased during the last 6 months increased by 37.5% und still not stopping. The attacks (70%) were primarily executed between 16:00 and 24:00. Sundays proved to have a highest DDoS threat.

Link11 Insights Report: DDoS Attacks from the Cloud

Between January and July 2016, the Link11 Security Operation Center (LSOC) observed a dramatic rise of abused cloud servers in the execution of DDoS attacks. The analysis of the LSOC shows an increase of cloud attacks by a factor 16. Within six months the share of attacks jumped from 2.1% in January to 32.3% in July and the increase has not stopped yet. The LOSC could identify a large amount of servers from Amazon and Google being abused. The providers of cloud services explicitly forbid the abuse of their servers within their terms of use. But that does not prevent the perpetrators from hacking the cloud servers and using them for their criminal intentions.
