Millions of corporate and private customers and 15,000 parcel shops in Germany alone rely on Hermes’ logistics services for deliveries. In 2017, the company’s IT team was increasingly concerned about the rapid growth in DDoS attacks, and wanted a solution to protect its entire network infrastructure, including VPN servers, mail servers, firewalls, web domains and applications against the fast-growing threat.
Hermes Germany considered several options, and chose Link11 because it wanted to have fully-automated, 24/7 protection against DDoS attacks without requiring its IT security team to be monitoring for attacks.
Alexander Sölter, IT Service Manager at Hermes Germany said: “For us, there was no question of allowing possible threats to impact our network first, and then reacting.”
The company also wanted immediate protection against the possibility of attacks, which Link11 was able to deliver using the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) to block any attack attempts. Hermes Germany’s network infrastructure is permanently linked to Link11’s data center via fully redundant layer-2 connections. Internet traffic is continuously routed via Link11 using BGP, which enables scrubbing of any malicious DDoS traffic in real time with zero latency, ensuring that only legitimate traffic reaches Hermes Germany’s networks. Critical web applications at Hermes, such as the www.myhermes.de domain are protected by proxies in the Link11 data center, which even block encrypted attacks in the cloud.
Link11’s 360-degree protection is cloud-based, meaning the deployment involved no hardware installation or additional staff training. Link11 worked closely with both Hermes’ IT security provider and other global partners that connect to Hermes via a range of different interfaces, to ensure a smooth deployment.
Hermes Germany’s Alexander Sölter said: “We now have technologies for the best possible protection with no latency issues.”
Link11 provides regular reports via its web GUI on the attempted attacks against Hermes’ networks and IP addresses, keeping the Hermes IT team fully informed about the current threat level, server availability and response times. Alexander Sölter reports that the web GUI is very helpful.
Link11´s cloud-native DDoS protection solution is fully automated, utilizing AI & machine learning to ensure fast and accurate recognition of malicious traffic, delivering a high performance time to mitigate (TTM) in the market. In addition, Link11’s Cloud Security Platform provides Secure DNS, Web Application Firewalling, CDN and IP Transit services to safeguard enterprises’ IT infrastructure and critical applications.
