Know your Enemy: How to Deal with Cyber Extortion

The December episode of the “Tech Talks” series is all about “Carpet Bombing”. What is it, what makes these attacks so dangerous, and what can be done about it?

Extortionists such as Fancy Bear, Lazarus Group or Fancy Lazarus threaten companies with DDoS attacks that can disrupt networks and take business-critical services offline. More and more companies in the UK are affected by these threats, which are mostly made in cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin.

Experts from Link11 will analyse the current threat situation and point out the challenges in dealing with this extreme situation facing a Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack, while a representative from the Police Crime Prevention Initiatives will discuss how the police and cybercrime agencies detect criminal activity. Finally, a legal specialist will discuss the possible repercussions a business might face if they do not implement suitable cybersecurity measures.

These and other questions were discussed:

  • DDoS extortions have been around for years, why is their number currently increasing so much?
  • How do DDoS extortions work and what damages do the extorted companies have to expect?
  • What should be done when a company is confronted with Ransom DDoS?
  • What preventive measures should one take to protect one’s company?

Speaker

  • Joss Penfold – Regional Director UK & Ireland, Link11
  • Simon Newman – Head of Cyber/Business Services at Police Crime Prevention Initiatives
  • Leonard Scudder – Partner at Berkeley Rowe Law Firm
  • Jenni Livesley – Context PR (Moderator)

DDoS Extortion Campaigns are on the Rise

Link11 and NimbusDDoS explain how the DDoS attackers operate and how cyber extortions affect enterprise IT security.

Extortion by cyber criminals is an acute threat to businesses. The attackers are increasingly using ransom DDoS attacks, in which victims are forced to pay a ransom in order to avoid devastating DDoS attacks on their unprotected infrastructure and thus expensive interruptions in business operations. Attackers, sometimes calling themselves “Armada Collective”, sometimes “Fancy Bear” or currently “Fancy Lazarus”, have been using this approach to attack companies across a variety of industries for several months. With increasing frequency, the Link11 Security Operation Center has had to conduct emergency response operations at companies affected by such Ransom DDoS attacks.

In the pre-recorded webinar, you will learn more about:

  • What a DDoS attack is and how such attacks affect a company.
  • What the motivation of the attackers are and how an extortion attack works from a technical point of view.
  • What the new wave of DDoS extortions by Fancy Lazarus is all about.
  • How companies should react in an emergency situation.
  • How Link11 & NimbusDDOS can help organizations proactively reduce the risk of DDoS extortion.

Speaker

  • Andrew Shoemaker – Founder, Chief Engineer, CEO of NimbusDDOS.
  • Joss Penfold – Regional Director UK & Ireland, Link11 Ltd.

How to Avoid the Most Common DDoS Incident Response Mistakes

DDoS expert and NimbusDDOS founder, Andrew Shoemaker, reveals the common pitfalls of DDoS incident response. These pitfalls result in longer downtime and greater DDoS attack impact; yet are completely preventable. In this recorded webinar, you will learn about:

As the corona virus continues to spread, companies are enabling their employees to work remotely and continue all business processes digitally from home. However, this important preventive measure also poses major risks for the cyber security of employees, as well as for the company’s entire IT infrastructure. This calls for a consistent strengthening of the highly networked systems and processes.

In the pre-recorded on-demand webinars with security experts from Link11, you will learn which challenges need to be addressed during the coronavirus outbreak and beyond:

  • Real-world case studies of common failures
  • Manual vs. Automated Incident Response – what the numbers are telling us
  • Where enterprises waste the most time during a DDoS attack
  • Get a checklist to incident response success

Speaker

  • Andrew Shoemaker – Founder, Chief Engineer, CEO of NimbusDDOS
  • Eduard Meelhuysen – Vice President Sales EMEA, Link11

Strategic Cyber Defense: Why Time Matters

The faster a security incident is dealt with, the lower its costs.

Time is money: it’s an old axiom in business, but it applies equally to cyberattacks. The more time that elapses until an attack is detected and successfully fend off or stopped, the greater the damage is usually.

Zero Outage Era: The show goes on

Link11 and Forrester provide an update on current market developments.

In the “zero outage” era, people expect digital services to be available around the clock. The massive increase in home working during the Corona pandemic has stabilized as a trend.

In this world of remote access and VPN servers, we are seeing new types of data streams that require different strategies for threat prevention. Legacy infrastructures must also continue to be protected in the transition to zero-trust architectures. At the same time, the threat situation is moving towards the web application layer.

Marc Wilczek, Managing Director Link11 and guest speaker David Holmes, Senior Analyst at Forrester, discussed the current developments in the recording of October 16, 2020:

  • What is the effect of the ECJ ruling on the invalidity of the US Privacy Shield?
  • Why have extortionary attacks using DDoS, among others, increased in recent months?
  • Are hosting providers and telcos in the crosshairs of cybercriminals?
  • What should you consider when it comes to choosing a state-of-the-art protection solution?
